create and share a mini-masterpiece

Just get started

Modern computing technology means that most people have a sophisticated camera and movie editing and publishing device in their pockets. There has never been a time when movie-making technology was so accessible.

Our media saturated culture, however, demands that on-screen content be ever more lavish and sophisticated. Big budget productions with huge teams of talent belie the fact that movies, in their early days, were also seen as an exciting new means of personal expression. And with the means of production so widely available, through mobile phones and personal computers, this has never been more true.

Once upon a time, film equipment was rare and expensive. Now, finding a camera or an editing machine is not the problem.

Finding a way to an idea is another matter.

Kineku sweeps away the possibility of getting bogged down in ideas which imitate big-budget movies. It’s challenge is to do more with less. And by bringing movie-making back to the unique point of view of a particular place at a particular time, the camera in your hand can reveal original and personal answers to the puzzle posed by the Kineku concept.

So, let the Kineku challenge lead you. Take out your phone, get started looking at the world around you, and create a mini-masterpiece.

Kinekulabs - explore moviemaking as a group

One of the beauties of the Kineku concept is that is entirely possible to make videos alone. But the idea behind forming a Kinekulab is to explore and experiment with the possibilities of the Kineku concept as a group of individual makers or as a team on a single project.

Two or more people make a Kinekulab. Working together,  developing creative ideas, and sharing technical knowledge is like making an artistic laboratory to solve the kineku problem.

Collaborating on ideas is a great way to develop confidence and ambition and, of course, it doesn’t need to be in one location – a Kinekulab could be online, either as a video meeting or a social media chat group and could have participants from anywhere in the world.

Get together. Form a Kinekulab.

Reinvent the Reel

Not just for filmmakers

Kineku ideas can come from anywhere – a play of light – an observed action – something revealed in a camera. But, it need not start with a film or videomaker’s vision.

Like other forms of movie-making Kineku can use the skills of writers, actors, composers, musicians and designers. A starting point for a kineku might be a line of text, or a phrase of music. It might be an actor’s gesture or a piece of costume.

Inspiration for kineku can come from any or all of these sources.

So, whether you are creating Kineku as a solo-moviemaker, or whether you are in a Kinekulab with a diverse group of collaborators with different skills or interests, try out a range of different starting points and see what kind of Kineku emerge.

You don’t have to be a filmmaker to be a Kinekumaker.
