17 second movie haiku

create and share a mini-masterpiece

What to do with your finished 17 second mini-movie

When you’ve finished editing your mini-masterpiece you will just have to add a 3 second title caption or black spacer. This is the standard distribution specification for all Kineku: 3 second title + 17 second Kineku = 20 second submission.

Once you are happy with your finished Kineku and decide it’s ready to share you should publish it first on your own YouTube or Vimeo account. To do this, you will need to have or set up a Google/YouTube or Vimeo account. If your email address ends with ‘gmail’ you’ll already have a google account.

As soon as you have published your mini-masterpiece, you can submit it for inclusion in the Kineku YouTube Channel Playlist.

The only judgement of what makes a Kineku is it’s length – it must be 17 seconds long, with an additional 3 second title caption. Once it has been checked and verified as conforming to the Kineku length specification, a link will be created to include your work on the Kineku Video Wall and it will be added to the relevant YouTube playlist or Vimeo Collection.

It will then automatically be an official Kineku movie, but just so that know, we’ll send you a Official Kineku Certifcate.

Remember. If it’s not precisely 17 seconds, it’s not a Kineku – it’s just a short movie.

Titles and tags

Every Kineku must have a 3 second title added to the front of the movie. This will have the advantage of separating individually crafted

Kineku when shown together on our playlist. For details on how to make title captions, and for hints and tips on design, go to our make page or search the Kineku YouTube Channel or Instagram page.

Titles cannot include movie sequences and must not be a part of the
17 sec running time or narrative. They may just be a simple text
caption or a 3 second black space. They could include a still photo or a sponsor’s or funder’s logo. The title or other graphics may appear within the 17 secs, but your Kineku must work as a 17 sec stand-alone movie without the title caption.

We recommend adding tags or hashtags to your movie descriptions or titles. This will help with searches online. Adding #kineku to a YouTube title will allow a search to select all similarly tagged videos. Vimeo has a tag entry field and all videos similarly tagged will be displayed in search results.

But, the best place to view all certifed Kineku is on the Video Wall in this website. Click on the link above to go to every certified Kineku published on either YouTube or Vimeo.

We have a recomended list of movie themes and playlist headings. Pick one of the below to label your YouTube video when you submit it. We’ll be creating guidelines on how to describe and label your movies to help them show up in searches.

Themes and playlist headings:

Drama

Personal Story

Music

Art

Factual

Landscape

Portrait

Memory

Use the Contacts page to send us new theme suggestions and we’ll add the best to our playlist headings and tag suggestions.

Submit your finished ideas... and more

Click on the Submit buttons anywhere on this website to access our submissions page. In this you will have to authorise any submissions as your own original work and that you have obtained permission to use any copyrighted material in it.

The only other qualification for a Kineku is that it must be 17 seconds long with a 3 second space or title caption.

But there’s so much more you can submit than just Kineku themselves. We want you to share how you made your mini-masterpiece and what inspired you or helped you so that others will be inspired to take up the Kineku challenge.

Kineku 17 second haiku movies are available on our YouTube Channel. You will also find movies and information on editing software, with links to free and paid-for apps, as well as tips and links to camera and audio recording techniques when you visit our Facebook, Instagram and X pages.

To be included in the Official Kineku playlist a Kinenku must be 17 seconds in duration, copyright cleared with an additional 3 second title or black spacer caption.

Kineku can be in any genre – drama, actuality, animation, experimental, art – on any subject. They can be shot in any aspect ratio – 16:9, square, academy, cinemascope – with multi-track audio or completely silent, and they can be in full colour, tinted or black & white.

All they have to be is your own original work on a subject you feel passionately about, and feel strongly enough to share.
