filmmaking workshop

After successful Kinekulab filmmaking workshops in Amsterdam, London, Norwich and Scotland, the 17 second movie haiku concept is coming to Liverpool on Friday 26th September 2025.

Kineku is a short-form movie project and creative movement inspired by the precision and economy of haiku poetry. Traditional
Japanese haiku must use only 17 syllables in a 5, 7, 5 pattern. Kineku movies have just one constraint: they must have a running time of
precisely 17 seconds.

A Kineku can be on any subject, use any genre or technique, and be filmed in any aspect ratio – but to qualify as a Kineku, it must be 17 seconds long and for distribution have a 3 second title caption added in front.

What is a Kinekulab?

A Kinekulab is any sized group that forms around the process of making Kineku movies.

Kinekulab Liverpool will be a 1-day workshop to introduce the Kineku concept and then collaborate or work individually to generate footage which can be edited later. A screening date is set as a target at the end of the workshop and all completed Kineku are shown together in a Kinekulab Liverpool Showreel which will ‘go live’ simultaneously on our YouTube Channel and on our website Video Wall (click on the following link to take a look at the Kinekulab Norwich Showreel).
To reserve a place on the Kinekulab Liverpool workshop, please complete the Registration Form below.

Details of the workshop will be sent at a later date, but a typical shedule begins at 10am and runs as follows:

•    Introductions (30mins)
•    Unpack and discuss the potential of the Kineku format – plan shooting (1 hour)
•    Shoot video and record audio on location in Norwich (3 hours)
•    Debrief and discuss: how shooting went; editing strategies and deadlines (1 hour).
